Finnish Industries EK Celebrates Five Decades in Brussels – the Work Continues for European Economic Growth

03.10.2024

A historic milestone was marked in Brussels on October 2nd: Finnish business celebrated 50 years of presence in the EU’s capital.

The Finnish business community has been ahead of its time: its permanent presence in Brussels began in 1974, well before Finland joined the European Union.

This anniversary was celebrated at the Royal Museum of Art and History, at the Cinquantenaire Park, a location with an apt name for the occasion. It was an honor to host a large number of guests from both Finland and the EU institutions, as well as stakeholders. A special thanks goes to the Finnish heads of office and staff members who have served at EK’s Brussels office across the different eras.

During the seminar it was highlighted that the mission of the EK’s Brussels office has remained consistent throughout the decades.  Since the 1970’s, our goal has been to promote Finland’s European integration, open up new export markets, make Finland more attractive for business, strengthen competitiveness, and contribute to economic prosperity.

From day one, it has been clear that the interests of Finland and Europe go hand in hand. Constructive approach and solution-driven mindset have been essential for both Finland and for our business community in order to contribute, be heard and gain results.

As Finland’s first European Commissioner Erkki Liikanen noted in his keynote speech, the past five decades have seen many turning points in Finland’s EU path, from major breakthroughs to European crises.

The most significant of these turning points was Finland becoming a member of the European Union in 1995. Membership changed everything – instead of trying to influence things from the outside, Finland could finally shape Europe from within. This was a big change also for the EK’s Brussels office, making us even more proactive in our advocacy efforts.

The work for Europe continues, as affirmed by EK’s Chairman Harri Broman. Finnish business community remains committed to advocating for a stronger Europe and Finland in the decades to come.

Minna Aila (EVP, Corporate Affairs and Brand at Konecranes), Jyrki Katainen (Head of Public Affairs at Nordea) and Fredrik Persson (President of BusinessEurope) joined on stage for a panel discussion moderated by journalist Nils Torvalds. The panelists explored ways to enhance the EU’s competitiveness. Key factors include a pro-business regulatory environment, closing the technological gap, deepening the Single Market, ensuring a level playing field, succeeding in the green transition, and strengthening Europe’s geopolitical position. There is plenty of work ahead for this fall and the coming decades.

We wish to express sincere thanks to everyone who has been part of EK’s journey in Brussels, hopefully we can continue to collaborate also in the future!
